Garden and rain

I have been so busy this week in the garden and painting inside the house. I am also waiting on new power supplies for my system so posting will be lite. I will try to post some pics from the bluegrass festival this weekend. I hope to be back up and running by the end of next week.

Kilgore and Kaine in Wise County

Both canidates were at MECC yesterday, and so was I. Jerry talked about his tax plan that gives VOTERS the chance to control the taxes. Kaine said this would hurt Virginia. "Kilgore’s plan to give voters the final say on increases in sales, income or gas taxes would harm the state, Kaine said, arguing that voters should let lawmakers decide." HumBug! Kaine said it does not show leadership to let the voters decide...Kilgore said "I think it shows leadership," he said. "It allows citizens to lead."
He criticized Kaine’s criticism.
"He never ceases to amaze me," Kilgore said. "All he does is criticize. I could walk across the James River and he’d say I couldn’t swim."
I like that reply! Indeed!

New Poll shows Kilgore still leading!

The new Survey USA poll shows Kilgore still leading Kaine by a 4% margin. That is down a little from the last poll, but I am not surprised and you should not be either given the Kaine TV ads have been up and running and all the liberal press support of Kaine lately. The democrats will see this as great news, but in reality with Kilgore just starting his TV ads the results mean very little. The poll was conducted on commencement weekend and in my opinion that was a bad choice. I am sure some Kilgore supporters are down over this, but I am not. Kilgore has just started his ads and with the primary soon his numbers will grow.

What the MSM wont tell us about Private Accounts

If you visit Spark it Up you know I support giving Americans the right to invest in private accounts. Watching the MSM, it seems there is not any support for this idea. It just so happens that 450 economists, including 5 Nobel laureates have came out with their support. Read about it!
Social Security Choice: 450 Reminders to the Liberal Media

America is being lied too. I agree with the article, if 450 movie stars slammed private accounts, it would be headlines. The liberal media is strong, but thanks to the blogs we stand a chance at finding info that is important. 450 economists is nothing to be ignored. When I was younger I thought 60 Min-Time and Newsweek were all good sources of information...I thought as a child. It is now time to put away childish things.

Accentgate is no Joke for SWVA

With all my posts about it I think this sums it up the best.

• It would be easy to scold both Kilgore and Kaine about the importance of sticking to the issues and not worrying about what Kilgore’s voice sounds like. But in truth, the southern accent carries with it a certain negative stereotype that could hurt a man like Kilgore in urban and suburban Virginia. That’s not fair, but it’s true - and everyone knows it.

  Months from now, the Kilgore campaign may find itself struggling to get its message to voters who can’t get past their candidate’s accent. If that happens, it would be a tragic turning point in Virginia politics - and the end of statewide aspirations for anyone who sounds like they’re from rural Virginia.

  Virginians who care about the future can only hope the content of a candidate’s message - and not the sound of his voice - will determine who gets the most votes on Election Day. If that happens, we’ll all be winners, no matter where we live.(Bold print by Kilo)

I disagree with the first line. I think Kilgore has presented a good plan and in detail on his website.

The new Stars Wars

The new Stars Wars has raised some issues. It seems Goerge Lucas recently said this at Cannes:

• "In terms of evil, one of the original concepts was how does a democracy turn itself into a dictatorship," Lucas told a news conference at Cannes, where his final episode had its world premiere.
  "The parallels between what we did in Vietnam and what we're doing in Iraq now are unbelievable.
  "On the personal level it was how does a good person turn into a bad person, and part of the observation of that is that most bad people think they are good people, they are doing it for the right reasons."

How could it be that he percieves America as evil? That fighting communisim was wrong? The world is good and America is bad? I guess I missed this view in my studies of history. All the good things the communists did for the world. Chrenkoff has a good post up and you can read it here. An excerpt is right on track!

The lefties and Mikey Moore, and now George Lucas will try to convince us that America is "The Empire" led by Bush. Well call me Darth Kilo. This will not deter me from watching the movie and relating it to America and the freedoms we have fought for, the people we have freed, and all the good we have provided to the world. May the Force be with You!

Raising Kaine- A Cry for Help?

Lowell over at Raising Kaine has a post up titled "Calling John Edwards, and Wes Clark, and…"
The Post is a call to democratic "heavy hitters" to stump and back up Tim Kaine. Lowell names a few including John Edwards. The same John Edwards who could not help John Kerry carry North Carolina or much of the south. Wes Clark is mentioned, but there really was not much support for him in 2004 as Lowell states he received 9% of the vote in the 04 primary. That was 2% more than his next choice Howard Dean. He also mentions the Clintons. I agree that Slick Willie would give Kaine a spotlight, but how much is the question and since VA is historically a red state it could go to his disadvantage. Hillary may show up as she is trying hard to move to the center, but again, this could go either way. Lowell ends with this:

• The last Democrat I’ll mention for the time being — not to say that there aren’t others who could be of great help to Tim Kaine in this election — is the 800-pound gorilla in the room, Governor Mark Warner. More than any other Democrat, Warner’s influence will be critical in this campaign.

I wonder why Warner has been silent so far? It could be the course of the Kaine campaign thus far and who would want to be involved with that. With Warners future political hope at stake, I dont expect much from him. I do agree with Lowell; Kaine needs help. But so far no one is offering. Time will tell who answers this cry for help.

UPDATED: Lowell has informed me that Warner was at the Kaine kickoff. I replied that I hope Warner does not get to tired campaigning for Kaine. I would expect more if I was Kaine. They are both in Richmond and a press conference could happen anytime. I still think warner has distanced himself from the Kaine campaign.

City Slicker

One of my daily reads The Salt Lick has a guest poster known as City Slicker. He posts today about a Roanoke Times article about what rural voters want. Both canidates are trying to gain the important rural vote.

• Kaine, who grew up in Kansas, also must compete with a native of Southwest Virginia who connects easily with the region's largely conservative electorate. Kilgore won 65 percent of the rural vote in his race for attorney general and carried every locality in Southwest Virginia.

  "Tim Kaine's got to get back to the grass roots and get through the culture," said consultant Dave "Mudcat" Saunders of Roanoke County, who helped craft Warner's rural outreach effort in 2001 and is co-writing a book on Southern campaign strategy. "Jerry, being a Republican from Southwest Virginia, is already through the culture."

So Kaine must convince rural voters he is one of them. That is his only task. kilgore on the other hand is

• Kilgore's campaign has used Kaine's record as a lawyer, Richmond city councilman and mayor to paint the Democrat as a liberal whose positions on capital punishment, gun control and taxes are out of step with the state's electorate.

One canidate trying to connect as the other(Kilgore) exposes Kaines past record. A big issue is Kaines support of the Million Mom March

• Kilgore also has attacked Kaine's position on gun rights, pointing to Kaine's use of city funds to help bus Richmond activists to the Million Mom March in Washington, D.C., in 2000, when Kaine was Richmond's mayor. Kaine said he approved funding for the trip to show support for participants who had lost family members to gun violence. He later reimbursed the city after gun rights advocates complained.

  "My heart worked maybe a little faster than my head," Kaine said.

  Kaine insisted he would not seek new gun control measures if he becomes governor.

  "Nobody who supports the Second Amendment has anything to fear from me," he said.

Sure you wont Tim.....Sure you wont.
City Slicker concludes with this: "Are god, guns, and twang all rural voters care about? Don't "y'all" have education, transportation, and environmental concerns? You wouldn't know you did from this article. At least Kilgore mentioned that there were other issues. Kaine's too busy trying to prove he's got SW connections."

Breaking Party Lines???? What a shame......

Democrat Defies Party Line with Social Security Plan

It seems one democrat has a plan.

• In new political maneuvering over Social Security, a Democratic lawmaker on Monday will introduce a plan for shoring up the finances of the retirement system, putting him at odds with leaders of his party.
  Rep. Robert Wexler of Florida says that by imposing a 6 percent tax on wages above $90,000, to be paid half by workers and half by employers, the government could raise enough money to solve Social Security's financial problems for 75 years. Workers and employers pay a combined 12.4 percent Social Security tax on wages up to $90,000 a year, but none on amounts above that.

Well it is a start I guess, 75 years is not the goal is it? I would like to see all Americans be able to invest their own money. I admire Wexler for at least trying to get something done. The article goes on to say

• In proposing the idea, Wexler has drawn praise from the White House but criticism from some in his own party.
• "He's a party of one on this," said Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
  
  "This is not the Democratic plan," said Jennifer Crider, press secretary to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Who would want to be democrat..... If you try to support your state you recieve no support and stand alone. Bush should applaude Wexler's effort, even if he dislikes the plan. I do.

This poll was from the RTD. I am not a fan of online polling but this one does show something interesting. The first poll asks if voting right now...Kilgore or Kaine.

Cat Blogging

After being intrigued, listing to the one's that I have been made to refer to as "mommy and daddy"... I found the opportunity to try this CAT BLOGGING out for myself. I have listened to dad talk about Ferdy for some time- even though I would walk about nonchalantly in disguise (of course). I wouldn't want them to think that I had any interest in their activites except when it comes to food. My opportunity this afternoon was that mommy was graduating from college so they were going to be gone for a good length of time giving me a great opportunity to check out what this CAT blogging is about and see if there are any available chicks online. After all.... I am a single male, in the prime of my life... and I've heard from several that I've quite handsome.

Little to my knowledge, They caught me with this cam that they set up and well... Here I sit with my paws in the act. Guess the job opening for a cat spy is out of the question. But blogging doesn't seem too far out of reach.

Good Morning America is airing a segment about Virginia's race for governor. Unless breaking news occurs, we understand that the piece will air tomorrow between 7:00 and 7:30.

The Coalfield Progress has this

• Former Coalfield Progress newspaper reporter Sharon Hatfield first heard the story in 1990 - that Edith Maxwell, a 21-year-old school teacher in Pound in 1935, had been convicted of killing her father, possibly by beating him to death with her shoe. Maxwell's case focused national and international attention on her, on Wise County and on the Appalachian region - nearly all of it unfavorable. The case intrigued Hatfield, a Lee County native, and launched a 12-year research journey. She studied files at the Library of Congress, the Library of Virginia, the Virginia Supreme Court and the Warner Brothers Library Archive at the University of Southern California.

Hatfield will return to Wise County later this month to read from the book during Pound Heritage Days, the town's annual Memorial Day weekend festival. This sounds good and I hope to see you there! Maybe a signed copy for Kilo!

• A Coeburn man has been charged with capital murder after two men were found dead Tuesday at a Sandy Ridge home in Dickenson County.

The report said it was a true double homocide and robbery. Most crimes here are crimes of passion.

Commonwealth attorney fighting to keep job while he serves in Iraq

"RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A Floyd County prosecutor wants to keep his job while he serves in Iraq, and he's asked the state Supreme Court for help.

Gordon Hannett, Floyd commonwealth attorney, is going to Iraq as captain of a Salem-based brigade of the Army Reserve's 89th Division. Hannett filed a petition with the state Supreme Court on Tuesday asking justices to force Circuit Judge Ray Grubbs to give him back his $5,300-a.m.onth job.

Hannett claims Grubbs didn't have jurisdiction to replace him last week. He had proposed running the office through e-mail and phone conversations while an assistant prosecuted cases in his absence. But Grubbs swore in a full-time prosecutor on Thursday to replace Hannett while he is in Iraq.

Later that day, Hannett swore in a different attorney, making it a situation only the state's highest court can resolve."

• As I was doing the daily reads I found this on Brians site.(Brian only had the link to RK) I researched around the site and found many troubling things. The info provided was for the most part rude and not backed up. A bunch of name calling. Some excerpts:

• Just think of the uproar if a republican called Kaine effeminate. What does that have to do with anything? The irony here is endless..let your mind explore the possibilities. This makes ole Kilo mad as heck. Just what are they saying? A women could not do the job? ( Read it All )

• I’ve put a lot of thought into this, since it is something that hits home for me, as I’ve said before. I’m starting to think that this is the first real, major mistake by either campaign in the Virginia Governor’s race. The signs are starting to appear in Wise

The town of Wise was covered with signs today. Right of ways and yards showed the first campaign signs of any numbers so far this year. I think the commencement at UVA-Wise and Mountain Empire Community College are the reason. I will say 99% were Sean Connaughton & Jerry Kilgore signs. To be honest about the 99%......I did not see any Tim Kaine signs, but I could of missed it. This is the most signs I have ever seen this early in the year. A sign of good things to come! I will make some pictures and post them soon.

George Allen

The Hill Has a decent article on Allen and his recent fundraising. Guess what....His accent is mentioned. Can you believe that...

• “He does have that Virginia drawl, there’s no question about it,” said Jim Kinney, the former dean of students at Allen’s high school, where Allen was the school quarterback. Asked by telephone whether Allen talked with an accent back then, Kinney, who still works near the old high school, replied, “No he really didn’t. He sounded like a kid in California, I thought.”

Other than that useful info the read is good. Allen has honed his campaign skills.

• Allen also has added a sharper edge to his campaign rhetoric — rounding out his staple of football analogies. He talks of “burdensome taxes” and “meddling regulations” and then quotes Jefferson’s praise of a “frugal government.”
  Taking a page from Ronald Reagan’s cowboy-movie rhetoric, Allen said he doesn’t want “federales” taxing the Internet, which got a laugh from the assembled crowd of about 30.

Yes he was asked about 2008

• “Are you going to run for president?” wondered Patricia Taylor, who volunteers full time with the Christian Aide Mission. “If you were going to run for president, I would vote for you.”
  Allen at first blamed a reporter for planting the question — then referred to the most famous line of his namesake father, who coached the Washington Redskins.
  “The future is now,” Allen said. “I’m paying attention to the present, and that’s 2006. But you never know what’ll happen in the future.”
  Although Allen has clearly advertised the event as a fundraiser for his Senate race, the presidential question tantalizes guests here.
  “He doesn’t want us to talk about ’08,” said Carter Myers, a local auto dealer who sold Allen a car he campaigned in. “He wants us to talk about ’06. But I’d love to see George Allen [versus] Hillary Clinton.”

The Huffington Post has Sparked it Up as of today. What a joke. She wants to rival The Drudge....No way! LA Weekly had this:

This Web-site venture is the sort of failure that is simply unsurvivable, because of all the advance publicity touting its success as inevitable. Her blog is such a bomb that it's the box-office equivalent of Gigli, Ishtar and Heaven's Gate rolled into one. In magazine terms, it's the disastrous clone of Tina Brown's Talk, JFK Jr.'s George or Maer Roshan's Radar. No matter what happens to Huffington, it's clear Hollywood will suffer the consequences.

Walter Cronkite had a post that I liked

• I've got some other exceedingly interesting pieces up my sleeve, like a proposal that the Democratic Party organize a convention this year to debate and resolve a platform that would provide the confused electorate some idea of what the party stands for…a regretfully missing ingredient in the politics of the moment.

I bet ole Huffy loved that! I thought Walter was anti-blog? Larry David provided some laughs with this post. A must read! The Blogroll is impressive but so far the news sucks and her guest bloggers were under 15 at my count. A big let down on opening day. Not much star power as expected.
My conclusion: I will return for the laughs! I doubt the news thing works out for Huffy.

Bring Back Campaign Whiskey

Jerry at The Blog From on High has a good post about campaign fraud taken from an article from the Roanoke Times.

Wow...Ciggs and beer. In my younger Daze we recieved campaign whiskey. During this time canidates would stump and make promises while you recieved a pint of sauce. I have never been one to turn down a drink, so I looked forward to campaign time. The last time this happened to me was a long time ago, maybe 20 years have past. The canidate was a incumbent sheriff. What is the difference in campaign whiskey and the beer tents at Shad Planking? It all seems the same to me. The local canidates at least would sit and share a sip and stump their cause. Who knows how anyone will vote when the curtain closes. I am surprised at the cheap offer of pork skins....Times have changed.

My mother has been a blessing to me. I thank God for her.
In my opinion....Everyday should be Mothers Day. I love you Mom.

• Ex-presidents James Carter and William Clinton have done more to proliferate nuclear weapons in Korea than anyone except Kim Jong Il. As Il was starting his nuclear build up in 1994, Clinton sent Carter to see if he couldn't fix the situation. Carter did -- but he fixed it for the wrong side.
  Carter cut a deal that gave $4 billion worth of light-water nuclear reactors to Korea (to supposedly provide energy), along with $100 million in oil and $5 billion in economic and food aid.
  As a result, by 1999, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea "the largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid in the Asia-Pacific region."
  In the original agreement, Kim was supposed to halt his weapons program. It is obvious now just how honorably Kim kept his agreement. Kim, the leader Jimmy Carter called a "vigorous and intelligent man." More vigorous and intelligent, we may assume, than Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton put together. Read it all

  Democratic National Committee (DNC) fund raising under the chairmanship of Howard Dean shows a disappointing $16.7 million raised in the first quarter of 2005, compared with $34 million reported by the Republicans.
  That tends to confirm dire predictions by old-line Democratic fund-raisers of a fall-off in money if Dean became chairman. He had promised to bring in heavy individual contributions, as he did in his 2004 campaign for president. But the DNC in the first quarter received only $13 million from individuals, compared to $31 million for the Republican National Committee (RNC).

Jerry Kilgore backs license law

The RTD reports Jerry Kilgore supports added documentation to get a drivers license.

• Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore said yesterday that proposed federal legislation requiring greater documentation by people seeking driver's licenses will make the nation more secure from terrorist attacks.

I am all for this effort. Not only will it make it tough on terrorists, but also fraud and people who may be wanted and assumed anothers identity. Good Job Jerry!
The atricle also had this tidbit:

• Kilgore rejected recent comments by the Rev. Pat Robertson, the Virginia Beach broadcaster, that federal judges are more dangerous than terrorists. Robertson was speaking of the long-term consequences of judicial decisions."I don't think they are dangerous per se; I disagree with a lot of their rulings," Kilgore said. "I don't have them on my terrorist watch list." Kilgore said he believes judges should interpret the law, not make it. He suggested that Robertson's comments might have been out of line. "We need to reel it back in and talk about the real problem here, and the real problem . . . exists between those who are making laws and those who are interpreting them," he said.

Well said indeed!! I am sure the moonbats will say Kilgore has abanded the christian base...but really. Pat Robinson takes things a little far and Kilgore has reasoned a good answer to a tough question.

The White Sox offense hit quite a few balls that didn't net anything Friday, but A.J. Pierzynski's soft single in the eighth plated two runs to make a 5-3 winner of Orlando Hernandez and stretch the club's winning streak to six games. This takes the good guys to 22-7. Tomorrow my favorite pitcher John Garland( 5-0, 1.38 ) starts and I get to watch on WGN

Raising Kaine ....Confused

John has posted a good piece about the fantasy world the folks at Raising Kaine live in. The article from RK has this.

• The bottom line is this: if you think George Allen would make a great President in 2008, then by all means vote for Jerry Kilgore in November 2005. If, on the other hand, you badly want to stop George Allen in 2008 (and possibly 2006 as well), you need to help make sure Tim Kaine is victorious in 2005.

I think George Allen is very well liked in Virginia, and I know he is in SWVA. The question of RK trying to slam Allen is ridiculous. I have posted about RK being out of touch and this wonderful post proves it. John explains it way better than me. The Richmond Times Dispatch gets it wrong

While reading the Times I found this statement:

I question this fact. Was this not the same UMWA who endorsed John Kerry? Is this not the 9th district that almost 60% voted for Bush? In my teens the union was strong. I honestly do not know any UMWA mines or miners that are working in Wise County. It is the belief of many that the UMWA has cost the county many jobs. There was corruption in the union that was well known and decertifications have all but made the UMWA extinct. The UMWA retirees will turn out to fight for health care, but to think the Union has any power in SWVA is not true. I did enjoy the grandstanding of Democrats who think this endorsement is powerful and will gain them votes. The last Union talk of any kind I have heard was Adelphia Cable votes union out. Congrats to this powerful endorsement! People here want jobs-and the union cannot provide them...Coal Companies can. I await to see who they endorse.

Laura Ingraham

Laura Ingraham did her show before her surgery today. That really is amazing and shows her commitment to her show and fans. Her surgery went fine and this from her web site:

Dr. Katherine Alley excised a few more millimeters of tissue, and she drained the recurrent "golfball" (Laura's term, not Dr. Alley's) of liquid that had formed around the earlier lymph node incision. Laura is at home "resting" comfortably. No pull-ups for Laura for at least a few weeks. Thanks to all of you for the prayers and good wishes. Keep 'em coming! Laura will be back on the air very soon.

I look forward to her return as her show is the best!

Google Bias

I am a fan of Google and have posted about it many times. When Google came out with their beta-news feature I noticed a MAJOR liberal bias. I used to have Google ad's on this blog, but I removed them during the Bush & Kerry campaign because of the anti Bush ad's. I use Google Alerts and it is amazing at the results I recieve. I have never recieved an alert concerning a republican source or blog. Google does however fill my inbox with the rantings of left wing blogs. I will admit it is fodder for the mind and it gives ole Kilo many belly laughs. I will put up with the bias and use this FREE blogger host to promote the GOP. I guess it is a fair trade.

Ann Coulter was on Hannity & Colmes tonight one night after this:

• A speech by conservative firebrand Ann Coulter (search) at the University of Texas last night resulted in one student being led away in handcuffs, after he asked an obscenely worded question about gay marriage, and made lewd gestures to the crowd. Last month, Coulter was jeered by students at St Thomas University in St Paul Minnesota, where students applauded every mention of Bill Clinton, and heckled Coulter's every sentence.
  School President Dennis Dease (search) found that the event "clearly violated our controversial issues policy," in which members and guests of the university "are expected to treat one another with respect and dignity." But Dease says the violation wasn't by the hecklers — it was by Coulter herself. Dease came to that conclusion, by the way, without having attended the speech himself.

Liberals dont debate. They throw things, curse, and disrupt. I think we all see this daily in our lives as the left rants and raves yet produce very few facts. The issue is why is this happening only in college forums? The left will continue to sink.

GOP Wins Election Challenge in Washington

• WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) -- The Republicans won an important victory Monday in their legal challenge to the election of Gov. Christine Gregoire when a judge allowed them to use a type of statistical analysis to try to prove illegal votes swayed the race.

  Republican Dino Rossi is trying to have the election results from November declared invalid. Rossi won the first count and a machine recount, but his Democratic opponent won by 129 votes in a hand recount of 2.9 million ballots.

I hope this clears it up soon. "Republicans claim they have identified more than 1,000 illegal votes - mostly ballots cast by felons, but also unverified provisional ballots and votes cast in the names of dead people."

Tim Kaine - Flip Flopping

It seems Tim Kaine slammed Jerry Kilgores proposed regional tax referendums until he was reminded Warner proposed them and he supported him. John has it covered here, and Norman has a good Tim Kaine quote here. Tim Kaine was FOR THEM-BEFORE HE WAS AGAINST THEM-NOW FOR THEM AGAIN.........Heh! That has a Democratic ring to it.

Gay Baiting

It seems this gay baiting thing is nothing new to some democrats. The Salt Lick has traced it back to 1996 in this post called"...the worst sort of gutter politics and gay baiting..."
Salt Lick calls for Kaine to end this junk...I agree.

My local paper covered the mudslinging in the Kilgore-Kaine affair. It really has no example of Kilgore doing anything except calling Kaine a liberal which his record proves.
