That's lawyer talk at it's best. I wont violate your right to hunt and fish...

It is not about hunting and fishing Tim. The Tim Kaine Metamorphosis continues. That F rating from the NRA is hard to ignore.

A reporter should of asked Tim: " On your many hunting trips what have you shot? Did you eat it?

• "You want to have a shooting contest? You want to go hiking? Give me a pocketknife and a set of matches and I'll go up against anybody," he said, standing behind an orange and black "Sportsmen for Tim Kaine" sign.

Today is the summit. I am not there..LOL

Lets look at the purpose:

Well the first goal is "To promote commonwealth over partisanship among political bloggers in Virginia." This is a pipe dream and to me a waste of time. No partisanship in politics? Ya'll discuss that all day for what it is worth. Next we have "To explore efforts to regulate political blogging." Regulate? Rules?

This forum is not for me, or anyone in my opinion. While I would of enjoyed meeting Jim Bacon, Bacon's Rebellion , Jim Hoeft, Bearing Drift , Jon Henke, QandO , Shaun Kenney, Shaun Kenney
Michael Krempasky, Redstate.org, Norman Leahy, One Man's Trash, Hans Mast, The (not so) Daily Me, Steve Minor, SW Virginia Law Blog, Chris Rivera, The Red Stater, Rick Sincere, Rick Sincere, Will Vehrs, Bacons Rebellion and Political State Report . I am sure I am not missed. To me the mission is not achievable, thus a waste of my time. Not to mention the fact of Lowell ("I could give a shit if I’m “considered a serious blogger”) Feld and Waldo ("You should not be blogging") Jaquith.....I have way better things to do than get in a pissing contest with them. In the end we will get reports from the summit. What was achieved? I predict other than a few friendships made or an off color rant against someone....NOTHING. Ohhh the talking behind backs and so on......I am glad I am in Wise!

Yahoo News reports that a glass bottom walk way that extends over the Grand Canyon could be built...How cool is that!

• The walkway, with a glass bottom and sides, will be supported by steel beams and will accommodate 120 people, though it is designed to hold 72 million pounds, said Sheri Yellowhawk, chief executive officer of the Grand Canyon Resort Corp., the tribal-owned company that is overseeing the project.

  "You're basically looking 4,000 feet down. It's a whole new way to experience the Grand Canyon," Yellowhawk said.

  Admission will be $25.

  The project is still seeking an insurer, said architect David Jin, who said he came up with the skywalk idea while visiting the canyon in 1996.

I don't think that is for me but what a great idea and I am sure it will be a success if built.

The University of Virginia's College at Wise has broken its overall student enrollment record with 1,945 students registered for fall 2005, according to director of college relations Jane Meade-Dean.

I am leaving to go carry my uncle to a grave high on a mountain top. It will be just a few miles from the place of his birth. Hennon carried me through many hard times in my life. It is a privilege to carry him his last mile.

He was preceded in death by a son, Hennon Andrew Rose Jr.; parents, Arlin and Maxie Rose; a brother, Lee Rose; two sisters, Eunice Rose and Peggy Rose; and niece, Mitzi Rose.
Survivors include wife, Patrica Rose; one daughter, Debbie Kay Rose, Coeburn; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Bill Fields, Wise; nephew, Carl (Kilo) Fields, Wise; and niece, Deennee Leonard, Bristol Virginia.
Visitation for Hennon Andrew Rose Sr. will be after 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at Estes Funeral Home Chapel, where funeral services will be held at 7 p.m., with Rev. Terry Rose and Rev. Danny Mullins officiating. Burial will be at Long Cemetery in Dante, Va., on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005. The family will meet at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Tuesday and go in procession to the cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn.

Prayers

It has been a long week for me. I got home about 12am and got a call at 3:40am that my only uncle on my mom's side was not breathing and to meet them at the hospital. At 4:15 he was pronounced dead.

This is going to be a long day.....

I will ask for your prayers for my family. Out of 5 siblings, my mother is the only one left. The impact of losing her last sibling, is to say the least, tremendous.

Behan vs Lowell.....Behan wins by a knockout!

The comments are over 40 now. This has been very interesting. To see the leader of the Raising Kaine site come onto a conservative blog and show his butt is priceless. Am I surprised? Not in the least. I have questioned the Raising Kaine site many times as has Norman and John Behan. John's post "Raising Kaine is hurting the Kaine campaign, Part One" was a good one. It was not an attack on Lowell, but a question of: is in your face rudeness a good tactic to recruit voters to support your candidate? I say no it is not. I posted this and got a warm Lowell reply. Nothing to compare to the rant Lowell puts down over at Behan's. He blames many:

• " over at RaisingKaine, we’ve been attacked relentlessly for months now by your “conservative” (”right-wing” is a better adjective) compatriots in extremely hostile, non-substantive, non-productive, ad hominem ways."

Attacked? I have not seen an attack. I have seen Raising Kaine posts torn up by fellow bloggers. A comment by Jim Patterson says it all:

• Neither Lowell or Waldo are capable of civilly accepting criticism. Their first reaction to anything remotely negative is to scream “TROLL!” and threaten to ban the offender.

  Simply put, they are both thin-skinned lefties of the most common sort — they love to dish it out, but can rarely, if ever, take it.

Heh. Waldo and I had a exchange before. I link to Waldo on my blogroll as he is a voice to be heard. Waldo said I attacked him- when in fact all I did was link to his post's and called him a jacko. For that Waldo thought I should stop blogging. I am sure many would agree with that Waldo!

This leaves me thinking about the much talked about bloggers summit. No, I will not attend and I plan to post why later on today or this week. I will stop this long post quoting Lowell Feld of Raising Kaine with a comment he left on John's blog:

Behan is playing hardball with this view of Raising Kaine. I posted way back that Raising Kaine was off base. There are 24 comments so far and they are good! (Even Lowell has commented). John also leaves us with this:

Federal Energy Bill

George Allen was In SWVA and had this statement about the new energy bill.

• "We here are the Saudi Arabia of coal," Allen said. "For new electricity generation, we ought to be using clean coal and advanced nuclear." (Read All)

I don't know about the nuclear, but I will support clean coal. The new energy bill is coal friendly and we in coalfields will feel the effect. The The bill's subsidies include $6 billion to convert coal to electricity.

The RK crew is scrambling! Read the post's and decide who is anti-immigrant. The issue is should we screen them before they recieve day care funded by tax dollars. This is lost in the scramble. The crew at RK know everything but where their man Tim Kaine stands on this issue.

For close to 30 years Pike County KY has hosted Hillbilly Days. The event benefits the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. The event was started by Howard "Dirty Ear" Stratton and " Shady" Grady Kinney, two Shriners with the Hillbilly Clan Outhouse No. 2 in Pikeville. The festival is attended by over 100,000 folks and continues to get bigger and better each year. I have attended many times and let me tell you it is a must for any Hillbilly! You can recieve your Hillbilly degree at the Pikeville college. The venders are great and the food is too. A schedule of events held in 2005 is here. A map with vender locations is here. The map will give you a view of how big this event is. I want to inform all my new friends over at Don Surbers that they should make plans to attend in 2006! Hey 100,000 hillbillies cant be wrong! I wonder if it will televised in my area? UVA-Wise has a channel and I hope they will carry it live.

One Word

Jerry Kilgore expressed opposition to proposed taxpayer-funded day laborer centers. Lets look at what was said.

• “Legal immigration made this country what it is today,” Kilgore said. “We honor legal immigrants when we ensure that our laws are followed. I don’t think it is too much to ask that people obey the laws of our society before they take advantage of what our society has to offer. To reward illegal behavior is to encourage that behavior and it demeans those who have followed the rules to come to America legally.”

Jerry has a problem with the centers as do I because illegal immigrants will use them.

• Kilgore said that if guarantees could be installed at the centers to ensure that illegal immigrants were not provided with taxpayer supported assistance, he would support the proposals. To this point, however, screening immigrants based on legal status is not emerging in the plans.

The press and the Raising Kaine crew are on this story saying Kilgore is "anti immigrant."

Reading the Raising Kaine post I found they left out one word. ILLEGAL. Pretty important word to leave out. If you read Kilgores comments then read Lowell's post, you will see how far off base it is. About normal for them. Why not screen them?

2008

The Templar Pundit has a couple posts I found interesting. The first one is "The Five To Watch." His picks for 2008 are Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, George Allen, Rudy Giuliani, and John McCain.

Well I do like Allen-He was a good governor. Rudy is doomed as his name ends in a vowel. I asked before "Who is Mike Huckabee." The more I learn about him the more I like. The Templar Pundit offers this look at healthcare. Some highlights are:

• The health insurance problem should not be dealt with by implementing a watered down version of CanadaCare (or EuroCare) in the United States. Instead, it should be dealt with on a state-by-state basis with proposals such as the ones from Gov. Huckabee (R-AR) and Gov. Romney (R-MA) that provide health insurance to the small number who cannot afford it and are not covered by Medicaid.
  
  Huckabee's system provides low cost health insurance for those who could not afford private health insurance but didn't qualify for Medicaid. The state's healthcare system is propped up in part by excise taxes.

The key point is "these proposals do not call for government interference with private hospitals and healthcare businesses."

A short one...

This weekend was a short one. I had Saturday off but I worked a train last night and got home at 6am. I am just getting up and doing my daily reads.

Polls

I had posted that Raising Kaine was silent on the latest Rassmussen poll showing Kilgore Leading Kaine. They have posted about it with this weak piece. Scrolling down I found this "Bush burned in new poll."

Well Don Surber via ABP tears this poll apart. It seems the poll was weighted with 49% democrats and 39% GOP. Raising Kaine is struggling! Between Norman and Don it is a daily guess who will tear them apart!

The search is still on for the missing miner. It does not look good, but he could just be trapped. If you watch this Video
You will notice trucks still hauling coal from the mines. That is a first for me. Stillhouse Mining is owned by Black Mountain Resources, a division of Cumberland Resources. The coal must move! This is very sad, with a man trapped or dead and the mines is still moving coal. When the company was asked about this they replied " No Comment".....I have a comment for them...Greedy Bastards!

 Kentucky coal mine roof collapse kills one; search on for another

CUMBERLAND, Ky. -- A roof collapse at a southeastern Kentucky coal mine killed one miner, and rescue crews were searching for another who was missing and could be trapped by a wall of fallen rocks, authorities said Thursday.Paris Charles, executive director of the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing, said the body of one of the miners was recovered about 5:30 a.m."There is an ongoing operation to find the other missing miner," he said. "We are calling this a rescue operation." A section of mine roof 20 feet wide, 20 feet long and 11 feet high collapsed without warning around midnight, Charles said.

 The two miners were part of a crew of about eight men who were working in the portion of the mine, performing what is called retreat mining in which coal pillars that support the roof are removed. Two rescue workers have been injured since the search began early Thursday.

 A Letcher County man at the scene said the miner who has been confirmed dead is his brother.

"We are not blaming anybody," said Travis Wilder, who said his 24-year-old brother, Brandon Wilder, died in the collapse. "It was just an accident."

Brandon Wilder, of Letcher County is survived by a wife, Kimberly, and a two-year-old daughter, said another brother of Wilder's, Tyler Halcomb. The family was expecting a second child on Dec. 18."He loved his job. He loved supporting his family," Travis Wilder said.About 20 rescue workers were trying to find the other man Thursday afternoon.A rock fall injured mine inspector Daven Hoskins, who was working on the rescue, said Chuck Wolfe, spokesman for the Environmental Protection and Public Protection Cabinet. Hoskins was treated and released from a hospital. Another worker, Mark Sheldon, a scoop operator, was admitted to Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va., with a broken shoulder and broken ribs. He was hurt when rock fell on him during the search, Wolfe said.

Pulling pillars is very dangerous...but what about mining is safe? Pray for these families!

New Poll

• August 4, 2005--The latest Rasmussen Reports survey in Virginia finds that Republican Jerry Kilgore still leads Democrat Tim Kaine by six percentage points in the Governor's race. That margin has held steady for three consecutive surveys.

  The August survey finds Kilgore leading Kaine 45% to 39%. Five percent (5%) of voters say they will vote for some other candidate. (Read All)

I said the Mason Dixon poll was a fluke! The new poll is encouraging to say the least. The main point I see here is a trend. This was the tenth poll on the race. The margins are somewhat stable with Kilgore leading by 10 or less points. I would like the lead to be larger, but if the 5 points hold that will translate into a landslide on election day.

It seems before the Jerry Kilgore conference call had ended the Kaine crew had sent out emails slamming him. Norm has the story.

It seems the Kaine crew left out a few facts about the Warner Kaine history.

•  Under Gov. George Allen, funding for higher education increased by 28.93%.

  Under Gov. Jim Gilmore, funding for higher education increased 41.04%.

  Please note that this was achieved without raising taxes (or "budget reform," whichever you prefer).

  In the budgets since Tim Kaine became Lieutenant Governor, higher education funding has decreased 2.86%. 

I will not comment as the numbers speak for themselves.

  Establishing the Rural Education Access Program (REAP) to encourage four-year colleges and universities to develop academic partnerships with rural community colleges;
  Developing more co-op opportunities for college and university students in science, mathematics and technology fields, giving them access to real-life, long-term work experiences; and
  Building more opportunities for internships for Community College students through creation of the Employment Access for Scholars (EASE) program.

Ram Update

I had posted this about Tim Kaine and his visit to Wise after reading this by Brian.

To add a little to the story, Terry Kilgore was at RAM too! The Kingsport Times reports:

• State Delegate Terry Kilgore, R-Gate City, seeking re-election this year, wasn't just pressing flesh and kissing babies. He hadn't the time even if he had the inclination. Dressed in jeans, sneakers and a RAM T-shirt, Kilgore was there at the crack of dawn as a volunteer helping to register the hundreds pouring through the doors.

  "It's just a humbling experience. All these volunteers are just so wonderful. I can't say enough about these folks here," he said. "I've been working in the registration booth and seeing all the people coming in for help with medical and dental, you become so thankful for what RAM is doing."

 I said it was in bad taste for Kaine to show up. On the other hand Terry Kilgore worked. Kaine thought it was "awesome"-Kilgore used "humbling experience." Very different indeed. Thanks Terry!

The loadout at Leatherwood. Leatherwood has a deep history in coal. The James River Coal company, etc. Check out more pictures here. While there I shared a few hours with a man named Ronnie. Ronnie was a real card to say the least. I asked him how long he had been mining. He said 23 years. "My father was a miner, and his father before him. He was at "Bloody Harlan" "I remember as a young man the fight at Brookside and the women who stood up for their men." Ronnie went on to say " It is strange to me that people call us hillbillies-hicks. We are way ahead of most folk. There are no race or religion issues in the mines. We are all coal miners."
This last statement rang out clear to me. When you see a miner, the lines on his face, the coal dust embedded in his skin, you are seeing a true American! Most came from other countries in search of freedom and work. "I will work my life away in coal, and when I die they will lay me down with coal. You know being a hillbilly is not that bad."
Indeed Ronnie...Indeed.

I spent 16 hours in Leatherwood,Ky on a train Fri and Sat. This beltline was a 1/2 mile long and had 8 stackers.
