About this "historic candidacy" B/S

Henninger nails it.

The most basic explanation for why Barack Obama may win next Tuesday is that voters want economic deliverance. The standard fix for this in politics everywhere is to crowbar the old party out and patch in the other one. It is true as well that the historic nature of the nation's first African-American candidacy would play a big role.

Push past the historic candidacy, however, and one sees something even larger at stake in this vote. One sees what Joe (The Plumber) Wurzelbacher saw. The real "change" being put to a vote for the American people in 2008 is not simply a break from the economic policies of "the past eight years" but with the American economic philosophy of the past 200 years. This election is about a long-term change in America's idea of itself.

I don't agree with the argument that an Obama-Pelosi-Reid government is a one-off, that good old nonideological American pragmatism will temper their ambitions. Not true. With this election, the U.S. is at a philosophical tipping point.

The goal of Sen. Obama and the modern, "progressive" Democratic Party is to move the U.S. in the direction of Western Europe, the so-called German model and its "social market economy." Under this notion, business is highly regulated, as it would be in the next Congress under Democratic House committee chairmen Markey, Frank and Waxman. Business is allowed to create "wealth" so long as its utility is not primarily to create new jobs or economic growth but to support a deep welfare system. Read it all.

Indeed. I have had some comments that there is no difference in McCain and Obama. I see huge differences. Henninger does too. We are at a turning point.

Bristol, Virginia Army Veteran Sends Souvenir From Berlin Wall To Sarah Palin

ABINGDON, Va. – A Bristol, Va., man is sending some special gifts to Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

A piece of brick and a short section of rusty barbed wire from the Berlin Wall are en route to the Alaska governor, courtesy of Jim Sisk, a 22-year U.S. Army veteran.

Sisk brought the souvenirs back to the United States in 1980, after serving in Germany. Residents of that country tore the wall, which divided east and west Berlin, down in 1989.

“I heard Gov. Palin on TV talking about former President Ronald Reagan. And you know he was the one who told [Russian Prime Minister Mikhail] Gorbachev to tear it [wall] down,” Sisk said Wednesday after a GOP rally. “I was stationed in Berlin from 1978 to 1980 and brought some pieces home with me. I thought she might like one.”

Sisk said Berlin was extremely dangerous during his time there and he never expected the wall, which actually consisted of three different walls, would be torn down.

Sisk gave the items to Mike Reynold, Virginia director of the McCain-Palin campaign, who promised to deliver them Saturday.

Sisk said he backed Mike Huckabee in the primary.

“I probably wouldn’t vote for McCain, if he hadn’t chosen Palin,” Sisk said. “I would’ve probably voted for an independent or written somebody in.” (Link)

Be Careful What You Vote For

While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. 'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter. 'Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you.'

'No problem, just let me in,' says the senator.

'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.'

'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the senator.

'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.'

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises ...

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. 'Now it's time to visit heaven.'

So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. 'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.'

The senator reflects for a minute, then answers: 'Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.'

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above...

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. 'I don't understand,' stammers the senator. 'Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?'

The devil looks at him, smiles and says....... 'Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted.'

    Shared Stupidity Inc. Endorses Mark Warner

    Jerry lets us know the liberals at the Roanoke Times have endorsed Mark Warner. The Roanoke Times shares the stupidity with the Bristol Herald Courier as they too endorse Warner.

    Neither paper talks about the lies Warner told. Neither address his unneeded tax increase or the fact that instead of returning the money to the taxpayers, it went out in new spending for important stuff like do salamanders suck each others tails.

    I will add neither mentioned the fact Jim Gilmore left a balanced budget, a fully funded rainy day fund, and froze college tuition. Not to mention his foreign policy experience.

    They are free to endorse any candidate they choose, but the reasons they list are suspect indeed. The readers deserve better.

    Government Controlled "Free" Healthcare Fails....

    Around the nation: Hawaii cancels ‘Keiki Care’

    Just seven months after its adoption with great fanfare, the state of Hawaii pulled the plug on its program providing for universal child healthcare, known as “Keiki Care” for the native Hawaiian word for “child.” Governor Linda Lingle made the decision as part of a fiscal re-evaluation to address a looming $900-million revenue shortfall by 2011.

    Intended to cover previously uninsured children with parents ineligible for Medicaid, the public-private partnership between the state and the Hawaii Medical Service Association had 2,000 enrollees when it was shelved. State officials had anticipated about 3,500 children would eventually enroll in the program (out of up to 16,000 estimated uninsured children in the state) but were surprised to find many parents dropping their existing private coverage they were paying for to enroll their children in the “free” program.

    HMSA, the private partner in Keiki Care to whom the decision came as a “complete surprise,” announced that they would continue paying for the coverage through the end of the year. They also noted that they offer private insurance at $55 per month per child. While that’s significantly more than the $7 co-pay for office visits under Keiki Care that parents had to come up with for office visits, the state was paying $25.50 per month per child—while the cost was being supplemented by the HSMA, the rate was sure to rise as more children enrolled in “free” healthcare.

    Dropping Keiki Care may not seem like the child-friendly thing to do, but given the examples set for government intrusion into healthcare on the mainland, Hawaiian parents may have been saved big tax bills in the long run.

    Very revealing. I underlined the key point, the same reason SSI is burdened. Why should I pay when they don't? Why should I work when they don't? My God will it ever end...

    Earlier this year, Ashley Todd, the disturbed young woman who made up a fake story of being attacked by a black man enraged by her John McCain sticker, was working for the Ron Paul campaign.

    Why am I not surprised. The Ron Paul and Obama movements are very similar indeed. A quick glance at the blogs will reveal most Paul supporters now spend their time attacking McCain instead of addressing the real threat of a Obama tenure as President and the socialist agenda he will advance. Amazing.

If I get fired for missing work I will be in Webb's face for his support of the NRA F rated Obama when he has balls enough to come down home again.

    Webb traded the facts about Obama's record for partisan politics. I will say here and will say it to his face when he comes. Born Fighting my ass, Born Squatting indeed. You have betrayed your home town support for political points with the anti gun liberals. We will not forget that Sen Webb.

    Anyone Watching Sons of Anarchy?

    The Sons of Anarchy are an international outlaw motorcycle club with many charters, including the Charming local, based out of a clubhouse adjacent to the Teller-Morrow auto mechanic shop. The Sons mostly ride customized Harley-Davidson Dyna Superglide motorcycles. Led by Clay Morrow, the club controls Charming through close community relationships, bribery, and violent intimidation.

    The full name of the motorcycle club is Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original Charter; on occasion, the show will abbreviate it as SOA, though more frequently the club is referred to as SAMCRO (a rough acronym of The Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original Charter[2]) or "Sam Crow." This nickname is also reflected in the original title of the show, Forever Sam Crow.[3]

    Club members have "day jobs" in local industries, but they primarily make money by importing illegal weapons and selling them to black drug gangs in the East Bay. (The gang that SAMCRO deals with is called the "One-Niners," the same fictional gang that feature prominently in The Shield, another FX drama on which Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter wrote and produced for several years).

    SAMCRO keeps meth traffickers out of Charming, which puts them at odds with the meth-distributing white supremacist "Nords" gang, headed by Ernest Darby. The SOA also have to deal with a rival Oakland-based MC, the "Mayans", led by Marcus Alvarez. Unlike their rivals, the Sons are relatively diverse and inclusionist, having one Jewish member, a Scottish member, and one Hispanic member, and disdaining the Nords' social perspective. (For example, they are quite happy working with the local sheriff Sam Trammell, who happens to be an African American.)

    John Teller and Piermont "Piney" Winston co-founded Sam Crow. Clay Morrow was the youngest of the "Redwood Original 9". Following John's death, his widow Gemma married Clay. John and Gemma's surviving son Jax (another son Tommy died in childhood of the "family flaw", a congenital heart defect) is second in the club's line of succession after co-founder and sitting president Clay. Jax is recently divorced from Wendy, the mother of his son Abel, who is born 10 weeks premature as a result of his mother's meth addiction.

    The family drama is loosely based on Shakespeare's Hamlet;[4] indeed, star Ron Perlman has said, "I’m sure they’re going to stick to the structure of Hamlet all the way to the end" of the series.[5] Clay is based on the role of King Claudius and Gemma as a Gertrude figure. Jax stands in for Prince Hamlet himself; his reflective questioning of the SOA culture, brought on by the birth of his son, references Hamlet's melancholy over the death of the king. Additionally, Jax "communicates" with his dead father by way of his late father's unpublished journal/manuscript; Hamlet, of course, literally communicated with the ghost of his father.[6] Lastly, narratively the Sons are typical antiheroes LINK

    Check it out. In my home town of Wise there was a club started by Vietnam Vets called the Warlords. I would love to write a book about that club.....Maybe one day I will.

    Bristol Herald Courier Endorses McCain

    Jerry calls it a shocker. DJ and SWAC Girl are wondering how it happened.

    I say it is because the liberal bullshit J Todd Foster has been pushing has finally hit home to the powers that be at Media General. While this endorsement is welcomed, it does not cross out the months of biased opinions from the BHC.

    J Todd Foster is quick to publish that the BHC is unbiased, but he damn sure cant deny that they have been unfriendly to the McCain / Palin ticket. He writes

    "One day, some of our most partisan readers will turn off talk radio long enough to figure out that reporting the news and criticizing politicians who deserve it does not put us in the bag for anyone.

    We will continue calling it the way we see it, Rs and Ds be damned."LINK

    Wrong J Todd, The BHC be damned and your dwindling readership is proof. J Todd please direct us to your unbiased articles on Obama and his record or lack of a record. On his support for taking our Guns and his support of infanticide. Instead we got articles on Racism because a Obama sign was vandalized. What about Obama's birth certificate, his ties to questionable characters, his 20 year relationship with Rev Wright...Sorry J Todd, this looks like media bullshit to me.

    The BHC ran a poll for readers. Pick Mcain or Obama. The results are landslide McCain. Combine that with the BHC losing subscribers at a alarming rate and the rival Kingsport Times gaining in subscriptions...I think we all see the true tale of the tape. The BHC is out of touch with its readership and they hope this endorsement will hit home. I got some news for J Todd, One endorsement does not make up for months of slamming the GOP ticket while ignoring Obama's socialistic views, his outright lie about accepting federal campaign funding, his attending a racist church, the list is long. Readers want the truth J Todd. Dished out in equal fashion. Until that happens your subscriptions will continue to fall while your rivals continue to gain.

    Must Read-Why I Can't Vote For Obama By Huntley Brown

    Dear Friends, A few months ago I was asked for my perspective on Obama, I sent out an email with a few points. With the election just around the corner I decided to complete my perspective. Those of you on my e-list have seen some of this before but it's worth repeating...

    First I must say whoever wins the election will have my prayer support. Obama needs to be commended for his accomplishments but I need to explain why I will not be voting for him.

    Many of my friends process their identity through their blackness. I process my identity through Christ. Being a Christian (a Christ follower) means He leads I follow. I can't dictate the terms He does because He is the leader.

    I can't vote black because I am black; I have to vote Christian because that's who I am. Christian first, black second. Neither should anyone from the other ethnic groups vote because of ethnicity. 200 years from now I won't be asked if I was black or white. I will be asked if I knew Jesus and accepted Him as Lord and Savior.

    In an election there are many issues to consider but when a society gets abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning to name a few, wrong economic concerns will soon not matter.

    We need to follow Martin Luther King's words, don't judge someone by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I don't know
    Obama so all I can go off is his voting record. His voting record earned him the title of the most liberal senator in the US Senate in 2007.

    To beat Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton as the most liberal senator, takes some doing. Obama accomplished this feat in 2 short years. I wonder what would happen to America if he had four years to work with.

    There is a reason Planned Parenthood gives him a 100% rating. There is a reason the homosexual community supports him. There is a reason Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Castro, Hamas etc. love him. There is a reason he said he would nominate liberal judges to the Supreme Court. There is a reason he voted against the infanticide bill. There is a reason he voted No on the constitutional ban of same-sex marriage. There is a reason he voted No on banning partial birth abortion. There is a reason he voted No on confirming Justices Roberts and Alito. These two judges are conservatives and they have since overturned partial birth abortion. The same practice Obama wanted to continue.

    Let's take a look at the practice he wanted to continue

    The 5 Step Partial Birth Abortion procedures:

    A. Guided by ultrasound, the abortionist grabs the baby's leg with forceps. (Remember this is a live baby)
    B. The baby's leg is pulled out into the birth canal.
    C. The abortionist delivers the baby's entire body, except for the head.
    D. The abortionist jams scissors into the baby's skull. The scissors are then opened to enlarge the hole.
    E. The scissors are removed and a suction catheter is inserted. The child's brains are sucked out, causing the skull to collapse. The dead baby is then removed.

    God help him. There is a reason Obama opposed the parental notification law.

    Think about this: You can't give a kid an aspirin without parental notification but that same kid can have an abortion without parental notification. This is insane.

    There is a reason he went to Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years.

    Obama tells us he has good judgment but he sat under Jeremiah Wright teaching for 20 years. Now he is condemning Wright's sermons. I wonder why now?

    Obama said Jeremiah Wright led him to the Lord and discipled him. A disciple is one in training. Jesus told us in Matthew 28:19 - 20 "Go and make disciples of all nations." This means reproduce yourself. Teach people to think like you, walk like you; talk like you believe what you believe etc. The question I have is what did Jeremiah Wright teach him?

    Would you support a White President who went to a church which has tenets that said they have a ...

    1. Commitment to the White Community
    2. Commitment to the White Family
    3. Adherence to the White Work Ethic
    4. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the White Community.
    5. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting White Institutions
    6. Pledge allegiance to all White leadership who espouse and embrace the White Value System
    7. Personal commitment to embracement of the White Value System.

    Would you support a President who went to a church like that?

    Just change the word from white to black and you have the tenets of Obama's former church. If President Bush was a member of a church like this, he would be called a racist. Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been marching outside.

    This kind of church is a racist church. Obama did not wake up after 20 years and just discovered he went to a racist church. The church can't be about race. Jesus did not come for any particular race. He came for the whole world.

    A church can't have a value system based on race. The churches value system has to be based on biblical mandate. It does not matter if itʼs a white church or a black church it's still wrong. Anyone from either race that attends a church like this would never get my vote.

    Obama's former Pastor Jeremiah Wright is a disciple of liberal theologian James Cone, author of the 1970 book A Black Theology of Liberation. Cone once wrote: "Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him.

    Cone is the man Obama's mentor looks up to. Does Obama believe this?

    So what does all this mean for the nation?

    In the past when the Lord brought someone with the beliefs of Obama to lead a nation it meant one thing - judgment.

    Read 1 Samuel 8 when Israel asked for a king. First God says in 1 Samuel 1:9 "Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do."

    Then God says

    1 Samuel 1:18 " When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the LORD will not answer you in that day." 19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. "No!" they said. "We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles." 21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD. 22 The LORD answered, "Listen to them and give them a king."

    Here is what we know for sure.

    God is not schizophrenic

    He would not tell one person to vote for Obama and one to vote for McCain. As the scripture says, a city divided against itself cannot stand, so obviously many people are not hearing from God.

    Maybe I am the one not hearing but I know God does not change and Obama contradicts many things I read in scripture so I doubt it.

    For all my friends who are voting for Obama can you really look God in the face and say; Father based on your word, I am voting for Obama even though I know he will continue the genocidal practice of partial birth abortion. He might have to nominate three or four Supreme Court justices, and I am sure he will be nominating liberal judges who will be making laws that are against you. I also know he will continue to push for homosexual rights, even though you destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for this. I know I can look the other way because of the economy.

    I could not see Jesus agreeing with many of Obama's positions. Finally I have two questions for all my liberal friends.

    Since we know someone's value system has to be placed on the nation,

    1. Whose value system should be placed on the nation.

    2. Who should determine that this is the right value system for the nation?

    Naming your child after candidates

    Mark Ciptak of Elizabethton, Tenn., has been in the news this week for naming his daughter Sarah McCain Palin Ciptak. He said he decided to show his support for his favorite candidates by naming them after Sen. John McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. “I’m totally McCain all the way,” he said.

    But Sarah McCain Palin is not the name Ciptak and his wife, Layla, originally agreed upon. He admitted to sneaking and filling out a second birth certificate form. The couple initially agreed to name the child Ava Grace. Ciptak has gotten plenty of attention for this stunt, but it’s his daughter who will have to go through life explaining her name. Foolish to name your child after political candidates; more so to do it without consulting the mom. The family has a year to file an affidavit requesting a name change. Let’s hope they go back to Ava Grace.

    Is that some priceless bullshit or what? The BHC judging what you name your kid? Arrogant jackasses one and all! I am sure if the guy named the kid Hussein the BHC would have a different view. This could be the stupidest opinion the BHC board has offered up to its dwindling readership. I mean the Board actually included this judgement of a name? In the same article ridiculing a parents right to name the child what they want, we have this

    Banning political clothing at polls

    The State Board of Elections adopted a ban this week on clothing, hats, buttons or other items that directly advocate the election or defeat of a specific candidate or issue.

    The ban is effective inside polling places or a perimeter of 40 feet from polling place entrances.

    The American Civil Liberties Union argued the ban violates First Amendment rights.

    The State Board of Elections said it has to weigh the right to free speech against the right to vote free of undue influence.

    We say stop the people from handing out sample ballots on Election Day. Honestly, there is nothing more annoying. But wearing a hat, T-shirt or button to the polls on Election Day is protected by the First Amendment.

    That is the BHC - They will defend your right to wear political clothing to the polls, but condemn your choice to name your child what you see fit. Alpha Jackass Award Indeed.

    Smelly Hippy Alert - Coal Protesters Get Their Day in Wise County Court

    Nine of the eleven idiots plead guilty.

    The nine pleaded guilty to criminal charges of trespass and participation in an unlawful assembly. Each was ordered to pay a $200 fine plus $200 restitution to the Wise County Sheriff’s Office and perform 25 hours of community service. Each also received a 30-day suspended jail sentence and one year of probation, which will be supervised only until the money is paid and community service completed.(LINK)

    Sweet. I look forward to seeing these morons in blaze orange for 25 hours, picking up trash in the very nice Wise County weather. They received a $200 fine, plus court costs, plus $200 in restitution. The 30 days suspended is sweet because if these idiots get caught doing anything in Virginia they will pull that back time! I as a citizen would liked to have seen a stiffer penalty, but this is not a bad deal.

    Read all the article and you will see these goofballs show no remorse. I will quote what the one Wise Co resident that was involved said -

    “We realize that in responding to our actions, the police and emergency services focused their attention on us, distracting them from the very important jobs they do. For this we apologize,” Hannah Morgan, 20, of Appalachia, Va., said. “While I understand my actions do not come without consequences, I maintain my stance that this was a necessary action I took in defense of our land, our people and our future.”

    How gallant! Here is the reality of the situation Ms Morgan

    Secret Service says "Kill him" allegation at Palin Rally unfounded

    SCRANTON – The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled “kill him” when presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s name was mentioned during Tuesday’s Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.

    The Scranton Times-Tribune first reported the alleged incident on its Web site Tuesday and then again in its print edition Wednesday. The first story, written by reporter David Singleton, appeared with allegations that while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd and mentioned Oabama’s name a man in the audience shouted “kill him."

    News organizations including ABC, The Associated Press, The Washington Monthly and MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann reported the claim, with most attributing the allegations to the Times-Tribune story.

    Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience, along with an undisclosed number of additional secret service agents and other law enforcement officers and not one heard the comment.

    “I was baffled,” he said after reading the report in Wednesday’s Times-Tribune.

    He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, after seeing the story, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton(Link)

    Father Names Baby Sarah McCain Palin

    Sen. John McCain hasn’t called. Neither has Gov. Sarah Palin. But Fox News has. So has NBC, the New York Post and Entertainment Tonight. Since early Tuesday morning, Mark Ciptak has been bragging about his new baby girl, whose name has everyone talking.

    What started as a routine birth announcement turned into a media frenzy for Ciptak, who spent much of Tuesday explaining why he decided to legally name his newborn baby girl Sarah McCain Palin Ciptak without telling his wife, Layla. She thought they had agreed to name the baby, who was born Friday night, Ava Grace.

    “I Googled my name late Monday and two hits came up. I did it this morning and it popped up thousands of times,” the Elizabethton resident said.

    Why did he pick that name? To bring attention to the presidential candidates he supports, said Ciptak.

    He and his wife had signed two sets of blank birth certificate documents Sunday morning. Ciptak decided before they left the hospital to fill in one of them with the name Sarah McCain Palin Ciptak, a name Layla did not approve of. But a hospital official confirmed that’s the name that will be printed on a birth certificate issued by the Tennessee Department of Health’s Office of Vital Records since both signatures are on the form.

    A representative of the Vital Records office said that under Tennessee law, a birth certificate name can be changed within one year if an affidavit is filed with the office.

    Ciptak broke the news to his wife Monday after he was contacted by the Times-News. The newspaper learned of the baby’s name through a routine birth announcement area hospitals give to the media.

    “To be sure, she was not quite fond of me or of what I had done, but we’ve had some time to talk it over, and she has been really supportive through it all. With so much going on, she told me that made it a little easier to absorb,” said Ciptak.

    Ciptak said Monday he picked the name as a way to support the John McCain/Sarah Palin presidential ticket.

    “Did I expect this? Did I think it would go this far? Absolutely not. Am I happy that it’s gone this far? Absolutely. That’s what it was all about, to get the word out, to be encouraging, and to be a breath of fresh air to the McCain camp and that ticket. It seems to have taken off.

    “We took those vows 13 years ago for better for worse, and we have always planned to stick with (those vows) no matter what happened. Even though it’s not as drastic as it could have been, (our marriage) is for the better. I’ve come to love her and respect her more through this.”

    Ciptak said his in-laws and his mother have not been as forgiving as his wife has.

    “I think they are planning my funeral behind my back. There’s some resentment from the family. The conversations have been short and to the point. We’ll see them soon, and I just feel like this too shall pass,” said Ciptak.~Read it All

    Presidential Character - Oh Yeah!

    Presidential Character

    Observing the so-called “debates” between candidates John Sydney McCain and Barack Hussein Obama, I was struck by the fact that, though these summits were short on substance, it was obvious that only one of these candidates possesses the high qualities of a statesman, and the prerequisite moral and civic virtues for an American president.

    If you are not sure to which candidate I am referring, please read on.

    Every four years, at the peak of every presidential election cycle, we’re told by the talkingheads and the party hacks that “this election is the most important in our lifetimes.” This time, however, they may be right. These are indeed perilous times. Our nation is facing crises on several fronts, the resolution of which will require the steady hand of a statesman in possession of outstanding character—character that has been honed over his lifetime.

    Ronald Reagan wrote, “The character that takes command in moments of crucial choices has already been determined by a thousand other choices made earlier in seemingly unimportant moments. It has been determined by all the ‘little’ choices of years past—by all those times when the voice of conscience was at war with the voice of temptation, [which was] whispering the lie that ‘it really doesn’t matter.’ It has been determined by all the day-to-day decisions made when life seemed easy and crises seemed far away—the decision that, piece by piece, bit by bit, developed habits of discipline or of laziness; habits of self-sacrifice or self-indulgence; habits of duty and honor and integrity—or dishonor and shame.”

    For the first and final word on the necessary character traits the next president should possess, let’s return to our foundation, our Founders, those who risked all to proclaim our individual rights and responsibilities as ordained by God, and outlined them in our Declaration of Independence and its subordinate exposition, our Republic’s Constitution.

    Our Founders wrote at length about character, both of those who seek high office (or, rather, those that high office seeks), and those who elect them. Here are but a few excerpts in their own words.

    John Adams: “Children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom... If we suffer [the minds of young people] to grovel and creep in infancy, they will grovel all their lives... We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other... We should be unfaithful to ourselves if we should ever lose sight of the danger to our liberties if anything partial or extraneous should infect the purity of our free, fair, virtuous, and independent elections.”

    Samuel Adams: “The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men... Nothing is more essential to the establishment of manners in a State than that all persons employed in places of power and trust must be men of unexceptionable characters... If men of wisdom and knowledge, of moderation and temperance, of patience, fortitude and perseverance, of sobriety and true republican simplicity of manners, of zeal for the honour of the Supreme Being and the welfare of the commonwealth; if men possessed of these other excellent qualities are chosen to fill the seats of government, we may expect that our affairs will rest on a solid and permanent foundation... [N]either the wisest constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt... No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders... Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual—or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country... Religion and good morals are the only solid foundation of public liberty and happiness.”

    Thomas Jefferson: “It is the manners and spirit of a people which preserve a republic in vigor. A degeneracy in these is a canker which soon eats to the heart of its laws and constitution... If a nation expects to be ignorant—and free—in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be... The whole art of government consists in the art of being honest. Only aim to do your duty, and mankind will give you credit where you fail... An honest man can feel no pleasure in the exercise of power over his fellow citizens.”

    George Washington: “No compact among men... can be pronounced everlasting and inviolable, and if I may so express myself, that no Wall of words, that no mound of parchment can be so formed as to stand against the sweeping torrent of boundless ambition on the one side, aided by the sapping current of corrupted morals on the other...[A] good moral character is the first essential in a man, and that the habits contracted [early in life] are generally indelible, and your conduct here may stamp your character through life. It is therefore highly important that you should endeavor not only to be learned but virtuous... The foundations of our national policy will be laid in the pure and immutable principles of private morality, and the preeminence of free government be exemplified by all the attributes which can win the affections of its citizens, and command the respect of the world...[W]here is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation deserts the oaths...? Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism who should labor to subvert these great Pillars of human happiness—these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.”

    At the end of the Revolution, when our Founders were endeavoring “to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,” Founding brothers Alexander Hamilton and John Jay and our Constitution’s author, James Madison, wrote The Federalist Papers, its most authentic and comprehensive explication.

    In Federalist No. 1, Hamilton warned, “Of those men who have overturned the liberties of republics, the greatest number have begun their career by paying an obsequious court to the people, commencing demagogues and ending tyrants.”

    Sound familiar?

    In No. 10, Madison cautions, “Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm,” and insisted in No. 57, “The aim of every political Constitution is or ought to be first to obtain for rulers, men who possess most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue the common good of the society; and in the next place, to take the most effectual precautions for keeping them virtuous, whilst they continue to hold their public trust.”

    Madison’s Supreme Court nominee, Justice Joseph Story, wrote, “Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall, when the wise are banished from the public councils, because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded, because they flatter the people, in order to betray them.”

    The Founders thus warned of the perils posed by the candidate who lacks political courage; the candidate who tells us everything we want to hear.

    In November 1800, John Adams, in his fourth year as president, wrote to his wife Abigail, “I Pray Heaven to bestow the best of blessing on this house, and on ALL that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof!”

    We should all pray likewise, now, today, this minute.

    As Adams understood, “A Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.”

    Almost two centuries later, Ronald Reagan reiterated, “Freedom is... never more than one generation away from extinction. Every generation has to learn how to protect and defend it, or it’s gone and gone for a long, long time.”

    So, what of the current generation of voters, and the two presidential candidates?

    On 4 November, a majority of voters will elect one of those candidates. This vote is much more than an election; it is a referendum on the ability of the majority of Americans to discern between one candidate who possesses the character and integrity of a statesman, which the office of president requires, and one who does not.

    At this pivotal moment in our nation’s history, it is without reservation that we endorse the candidacy of John McCain. Link
