Coal and Jobs - More Important Than Lowell knows
According to the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, about 4,400 coal miners work in Virginia, digging the state’s top energy source out of the ground, and thousands more work in supporting industries.
Most of those jobs are in Buchanan, Dickenson and Wise counties, and coal is also produced in Russell, Tazewell and Lee counties. Link

Every convenience store, restaurant, theater, grocery store, gas station, well, you get the picture, depends to some extent on the local coal industry for its existence.
Without the coal severance tax schools and local government would be deeper in the hole than they are now.
Sure Lowell, it's easy. Just kill off the few good paying jobs in an area and there will be no ripples throughout the local economy.
If you believe that, then moving the nation's capital to Omaha would have no effect on Northern Virginia at all. Right...
