If you had one death in 2006, then two deaths in 2007. VSP would report a "dramatic 100% increase in highway deaths." They would not bother to mention that there were just two fatalities. They use these rather vague statistics to bargain with the Assembly to get ever greater funding for their pet programs.
When they report an increase of "87%" always ask, 87% of what? What were the actual numbers of fatalities and how does this compare over all of the years since statistics were kept on that particular segment of traffic fatalities? Also compare the fatalities based on their per capita population on the roads.
Last year, VSP made a big production out of a report of increase fatalities on I-95, but when we examined the data, the fatalities were mostly very late at night and early in the morning when sleepy people and drunks are prone to run off of the road. During normal driving times, there I-95 corridor was very safe.
Always be wary of government agencies presenting figures to best support an increase in their own budgets.
