Wise County restores property tax rate....
While other counties are fighting it out -
WISE — The Wise County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday restored the county’s property tax rate to 57 cents per $100 valuation following a bid by Big Stone Gap Supervisor Virginia Meador to set the rate at 54 cents.
The rate of 57 cents was rolled back earlier this year to 50 cents after triggering a state tax revenue threshold increase of no more than 1 percent following a property tax reassessment. Wise County’s recent reassessment exceeded the state threshold by more than 14 percent. While the issue before supervisors was technically a tax increase, in reality it was to restore the tax rate to 57 cents.
However, Meador said the board should consider “people on minimum wage struggling to raise a family. They deserve a break.”
Her motion failed 2-6 with only Chairman Robby Robbins supporting Meador.
Dana Kilgore of Wise offered the motion to restore the rate to 57 cents. She said a median household would only pay $5.24 more a month in property taxes, a sum unlikely to “put a hardship on anyone.”(link)
So it is actually a tax increase. I guess it could be worse. Hats off to Ms Meador(R) for standing strong.

Was their a public hearing on this?
Yes there was DJ. This Kilgore lady is a Republican?
According to the SBE, yes, she is. Then again, I'm guessing the Repubs in Augusta were hoping on playing the same game until SWAC Girl et al shamed them into equalizing the rate.
