State Corporation Commission Approves Wise County Power Plant
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - State regulators are giving Dominion the green light for a new coal-fired power plant in southwest Virginia.
The State Corporation Commission gave its approval Monday for construction of the $1.8 billion power plant proposed for Wise County.
The state Air Pollution Control Board must still issue permits for the plant.
Supporters view the plant as an economic boost for the job-hungry region. But environmentalists say the 585-megawatt power plant would pollute the air and endanger health.
The SCC also approved a rate increase to finance the construction of the new plant, but put cost control measures in place. Dominion must prove all additional costs are "reasonable and prudent" before charging customers. (LINK)
This is great news but the battle is not over.
