Boulder Kills Woman on State Bike Trail
State Department of Conservation and Recreation spokesman Jim Meisner Junior says the rock struck 48-year-old Sudie Jenkins Hatcher of High Point, North Carolina shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday at milepost 28.5 in the New River Trail State Park. Hatcher was taken to Wythe County Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m.
Meisner says the group could hear the boulder crashing through the woods before it became airborne off a hill and struck Hatcher on the right side of her head and upper body. He says the rock was 3 feet long and 1½ feet wide.
Meisner says there were no signs of rock slides in the area.(LINK)
