Is Jim Webb a anti gay Bigot?
One thing is certain, Sen Jim Webb and Gen Peter Pace support the same policy regarding homosexuals in the military.
"I think [the military's don't ask/don't tell policy] is a good policy for the basic reason that when you look at the confined quarters that people live in, I think you would have some extremely difficult problems if there were more overt lifestyle issues at play. I think there have always been gays in the military and there always will be. Young people living in cramped quarters need to have zones of privacy. I think it has worked because it allowed people to keep zones of privacy. That's why I support it." (James Webb in the San Diego Union-Tribune, 10/30/05)
"I support the don't ask, don't tell rule. I think that the military is a different environment. It's one where we've always had gays in the military, we always will." (James Webb on MSNBC Hardball, 6/8/06)
I must of missed these quotes in Lowell's post. Pace was truthful and put his feelings out there-right or wrong. We can argue morality all day, but please Lowell stop trying to convince us that Webb is a champion of gay rights in the military. They both support the same policy.

Consider that homophobes, racists, and bigots can be very disruptive to morale and unit cohesiveness in the military. Each situation needs to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. A blanket policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell” that coincidentally creates institutionalized closeting of gay servicemen seems, at least, unfair, unethical, and unenlightened. For current or retired officers to suggest otherwise seems to bring into question the leadership and the professionalism of our military generally.
And when I campaigned for Jim Webb I imagined a more eloquent, principled, and persuasive voice in the Senate in support of gay rights.
