Christmas Traditions Part 4
I am one of those people who can listen to Christmas music all year long. I prefer the traditional songs of old but this newer song remains one of my very favorite.
I can not think of a more perfectly wonderful cake to bake in honor of that day we celebrate the birth of the Holy infant who brings peace and joy and hope to a world so in need.
Waldorf Astoria Cake
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
½ C. Crisco
1 ½ C. sugar
3-4 oz red food coloring
2 C. flour
1 T. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 C. buttermilk
1 Tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. soda
Cream together eggs, vanilla, Crisco, sugar and coloring. Sift together flour, cocoa, and salt. Add this to creamed mixture alternating with the buttermilk. Beat until fluffy. Fold in vinegar and soda. Do not beat. Bake in (2) 9" round cake pans greased and floured at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.
Frosting
Cook 1 ½ C. milk, ¼ and 1/8 C. flour over low heat until thick-then let cool.
Beat at high speed: 1 ½ C granulated sugar, ¾ C. Crisco and 1 ½ sticks butter.
When fluffy add the sugar mixture to the milk mixture and beat until it looks like whipped cream. Spread on cooled cake.
