Keeping our Children Safe from Sexual Predators
According to John Walsh's organization Family Watchdog
1 of 5 girls and 1 of 6 boys will be molested before their 18th birthday.
90% of all sexual assaults against children are committed by someone whom the victim knew.
The typical sexual predator will assault 117 times before being caught.
The re-arrest rate for convicted child molesters is 52%.
Over 1,000 registered offenders report a new address every day.
These are very startling facts in a society where we can become very complacent and trusting, or are just too busy to pay attention. Gone are the days where children could freely roam the neighborhood and any mother on the block was your newly adopted mother at a moments notice. Parents now must be more pro-active then ever before. Actually we all need to be pro-active as these crimes are not just committed on the nations children- we are all at risk. Below are some sites that I have found to be very informative- not just with letting me know if there are violate predators in the area but also with many instructional tools about staying safe and for training our children to be alert.
Klaaskids -I really like this site. It states that in Virginia there are 12,472 Sex Offenders on the Virginia Sex Offender Registry as of April 10,2006.
ChildSafeNetwork- this site offers free searches, a free child identity kid and other goodies.
I must applaud Governor Tim Kaine and Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell, for their recognition that Virginia's laws must be tightened. On April 24, Governor Kaine signed into legislation tougher penalities for, and increased monitoring of, sexual predators.
