Jim Webb's Racial Problems
When the race card is played nobody wins. When the attacks against George Allen resurfaced I was quick to point out that Jim Webb has his own problems. Today the RTD has this huge article about Jim Webb's Confederate Fetish. The speech was not from a teenage Jim Webb, but a Vietnam vet, ex-Sec of the Navy in 1990. If you read Webb's Born Fighting you will find more about his love of the confederacy. That book was written in 2004. In Jim Webb's speech he pretty much denies the Civil War was about slavery, saying:
"I am not here to apologize for why they fought, although modern historians might contemplate that there truly were different perceptions in the North and South about those reasons, and that most Southern soldiers viewed the driving issue to be sovereignty rather than slavery."
Will this problem go away? Doubtful. It is ugly and in the end nothing is gained. I am glad the RTD published this to inform readers that Jim Webb has his own admiration for the confederacy that goes beyond a flag. Jerry mirrors my thoughts on this exactly with his post here. With the stunning poll results here, and Alice showing Webb stacked the deck here, it has not been a good week for Jim Webb.
