Harris Miller vs Jim Webb
The Virginia Pilot has a good article about the Harris Miller-Jim Webb race. With the left side of the Virginia blogosphere a flame for Webb, Miller has ran a somewhat silent campaign. The short piece hits on some basic facts. While Webb shows up in his gas guzzler, Miller is racking the miles up on his hybrid. Allen should take notice of that, we all should. The Pilot breaks it down as the techie against the war hero. Here are a few lines from the article.
Miller, an information technology executive and longtime Fairfax County party pillar may not be voters' first choice for a beer-drinking buddy. And he doesn't have Webb's hero pedigree.
Instead, Miller offers a witty, razor-sharp critique of Republican failings, one that makes him a favorite of Democrats who have toiled with him in the trenches. Or, as he put it in an editorial board interview, "Part of my challenge is to convince voters that we're not running for student body president."
Ouch! We all have read that Miller has pushed for debates and Webb has ducked them one after the next. I think when the debates do happen this race is over.
His immediate challenge is in getting Webb to square off for a debate. One of their few joint appearances is scheduled for Sunday, May 21, on Joel Rubin's "On the Record" show.
Miller's eagerness for a debate is understandable. Once the topic moves beyond Iraq, Webb labors in deep waters that Miller swims in easily.
Another ouch! Many people have said Miller is the stronger threat to Sen Allen. The last polls showed he is gaining ground. I have noticed when asked questions Webb has replied many times that he cant address that because he has not researched enough to form an opinion or plan. His speeches are vague to say the least. Both candidates had better school up if they want to debate Sen Allen. The Pilot is right. After the anti war, anti Bush talk, Webb offers nothing. The upcoming debate will be revealing. I predict Miller will take Webb to school. I also predict that when either stand on a stage with Sen Allen for a debate they will look like lambs in the midst of a lion.
BTW-I hear Webb is in California raising good ole Cali liberal dollars. Nothing wrong with that, but it does make me smile.
