Patriot Act Extended One Month
The US House of Representatives voted to extend the Patriot Act for one month. This is not what President Bush wanted, but that is what he gets. With the wire tapping issue ringing loud and even Republicans questioning his actions, some are predicting a huge battle next month. I think there will be grandstanding in the House, but in the end the Act will pass. I don't believe many Congressmen or Senators would take that chance. We have made progress under the Patriot Act and have not been atttacked since 9/11. If the Act is weakend or abolished and we are attacked again political heads would roll. That is a big gamble for our elected reps to take.
Hennessy has this scenario of a political add after such an unfortunate attack:
News stock shot of the disaster scene. Voice over of a child talking about missing her mother and father. Fade to b&w head shots of key Senators who filibustered the Patriot Act extensions. Announcer says: "This disaster proudly sponsored by the Democrats." Fade to Bush standing on the rubble of the Towers, bullhorn in hand, retired firefighter at his side.
I support the Patriot Act. I could care less if they wiretap as long as it saves lives. This war on terror is the biggest battle we have ever faced. Extreme measures are needed and needed quick. I really dont see how I have lost any freedom under the Patriot Act, but I do see what could be lost without it. Maybe another 9/11. I have not forgotten and I know I never will.
