Wise County to hike courthouse fee to pay for security improvements?
Sounds like this will be a go.
WISE — A small increase in Wise County’s courthouse maintenance and renovations fee — collected on criminal and civil cases litigated in the county — will be deliberated by the Board of Supervisors next month.
The Virginia General Assembly authorized a $3 increase in the current $10 fee, which has brought in an average of $30,000 annually since it was installed three years ago.
The increase legislation “was introduced in the General Assembly to (help) those courthouses that needed assistance in the area of court security,” Wise County Administrator Shannon Scott said Friday.
“The age of our courthouse certainly qualifies. We have five entrances to secure, and because of the age of our building it is just difficult. We face the choice of having (all courthouse patrons) use the (parking garage elevator entry) or placing metal detectors at each of our entrances, and that is just a difficult situation to deal with.”(link)
The public hearing for the increase is set for the board’s May 7 meeting. Small scale abuser fee? I'm just sayin...
