Coal to Liquid is not Junk Science
My readers from the coalfields need to check this out. From Isophorone.
It looks like our old friend Henry "Nostrilitis" Waxman is at it again, this time assisted by Virginia's own Tom Davis (R-11). The two sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates demanding to know to what extent the Defense Department is -- Are you sitting down? This is shocking! -- experimenting with coal-to-liquid fuels! The letter cites a new law called "The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007" (which means President Bush must have signed it) a 310-page law (at least in PDF form) which is larded up with all kinds of interesting provisions.
You got to read all of this. Voters in the coalfields had better wake up.

Waxman is a weasel. Coal to liquid fuel was being done in WWII. These guys are morons. Thank God Davis is retiring, if thats a sample of his work.
Kilo,
Wasn't there a time when this was available in Wise County? CTC fuels I think.
Cargosquid,
The South Africans were also doing this with the SASOL process more recently. I would say this shows more promise that corn ethanol. Besides, there are the issues of harassing the military and of coalfield jobs.
From the letter, it seems like Waxman also wants to use this as another stick with which to poke EPA.
Carl,
Thanks for the citation.
I think the name was CTC fuels, but I cant find any info.
If I am not mistaken, in Wise Co they had five gas stations that sold fuel made from coal. It was cheaper than reg gas at the time.
I will get the info and post about. A trip to the library must be made.
Thank you Ron for reminding me about this!
