How About Those Cubs!
As a boy, my friends and I would start joking after the first complete week of baseball season that the Cubs were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. I was 10 years old in 1975. Stars like Ferguson Jenkins, Joe Pepitone, and Ernie Banks were gone. They were replaced by Rick Monday, Jose Cardenal, and Bill Madlock. That year the Cubbies were 75-87, and finished 5th in NL Eastern Division. They only had three pitchers with winning seasons-Steve Stone, Ray Burris, and Oscar Zamora. Not a lot to cheer about.
The Cubs are sitting in first place, a game and a half ahead of the Brewers. They play on WGN today and since it is Labor Day I am going to watch for old times sake if nothing else. I have witnessed the Bulls, Bears, and White Sox all take a crown. I am doubtful about the Cubs but who knows. Go Cubbies!
