3rd District Special Election
Kathy Still has a article called Special election anything but typical. Ms.Still brings to light this election is very important to both parties. Shea Cook will try to gain the Republicans a seat that has been held by Democrats for years. The Democrats want Dan Bolling to hold said seat showing the momentum gained with the election of Tim Kaine. Still points out how important Buchanan voters will be since they are the only area that supported Tim Kaine. The rest of the third district supported Jerry Kilgore. One interesting fact is the election is on govt "check day". So will the check day voters go to the polls while out to do their shopping and paying bills? Doubtful. The article say's it could be a single digit turnout.
Also Chap Peterson is coming to help out Bolling by knocking on doors and such. Brian Patton will also help out if he recovers from what could be the areas first case of bird flu. I think by Chap coming it shows that Shea Cook is well liked in the third district and the democrats are organizing GOTV. This could bite Cook in the butt. No word as to the republicans doing the same. I did see a Jerry Elkins (running as independent) ad on tv yesterday. I would of thought the two major parties would have some ad's out. Maybe Cook at the forum and Bolling preaching at his church?
I read a letter to the editor in the BHC - I cant find it online, if anyone can let me know. It was a Bolling supporter mad because Cook has made drugs a priority in his campaign. The writer could not understand why as drugs are a statewide problem not just a third district problem. True to a point but lets look at the facts . According to this article in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph the problem is an epidemic. Trading mules for oxy contin and methadone clinics sprouting up. Overdoses in SWVA have tripled in tha past few years. Shea Cook knows that this is a big problem. If you were a business looking at locating here, that statistic alone would turn you away. There is not a single family here that has not been touched by this drug problem and I am glad Cook is wanting to do something about it. Shea Cook is by far the best choice.
